Patented Innovation. Legendary Performance. Truly Spectacular

The patented Vitalizer circuitry makes the Vitalizer Mk3-T an unmatched tool for sound design. Whether in the studio or on stage, it brings audio productions to life — with greater detail, enhanced transparency, increased perceived loudness, and, when needed, a deep, powerful low-end.

The Vitalizer Mk3-T doesn’t just trade the iconic gold finish of its predecessor for the sleek new black design of the SPL Studio Series — it also features an upgraded internal audio voltage of ±18V. This elevates the third-generation classic to new sonic heights, delivering an even more refined and immersive sound experience.

The Five Core Controls of the Vitalizer

Drive
The Drive control adjusts the level entering the filter network. It ranges from -20 dB to +6 dB. When set to the center position (0 dB), the level matches the input signal exactly.

OVL
The OVL (Overload) LED warns of potential input or internal overloads. It lights up 3 dB before clipping occurs, ensuring that the Vitalizer consistently delivers clean and optimal sound.

Bass Sound
The Bass Sound control allows you to shape the character of low frequencies by blending between two tonal colors:

  • Soft – Turning the control to the left of center produces a smooth, warm bass response, ideal for rounded and lush low-end.

  • Tight – Turning it to the right delivers a dry, punchy, and percussive bass character, enhancing definition and attack.

The scale dots on the right side of the control are shown as squares to symbolize the contoured, tight bass sound.

Bass Comp

The Stereo Vitalizer Mk3-T features a highly effective and intuitive one-knob bass compressor, designed exclusively for the bass processing path. This ensures the original bass content remains untouched while enhancing control and punch.

Attack, Release, and Threshold are pre-set for optimal performance. Turning up the Bass Comp control simultaneously increases the compression ratio and lowers the threshold, making it easier to achieve the desired amount of compression without overthinking the settings. The compressor operates with a soft-knee characteristic, delivering smooth and musical results that remain transparent.

Because the compression is applied only to the bass path, the high end stays open, airy, and dynamic—even at stronger compression levels.

The Gain Reduction LED (“GR”) illuminates to indicate that the compressor is active.

Mid-Hi Tune

The Mid-Hi Tune control sets the starting frequency of a broad-band shelving filter. Based on the setting of the Process control, all frequencies above this point—extending to the upper limits of the audible spectrum—are enhanced.

The frequency range spans from 1.1 kHz (hard right) to 22 kHz (hard left).
This section of the signal path incorporates a Sovtek 12AX7 double triode tube, which adds refined transparency and imparts a soft, silky texture to the midrange frequencies.

Process

The Process control adjusts the blend between the enhanced Bass Sound and Mid-Hi Tune components relative to the original signal. It also determines the degree of attenuation applied to dominant midrange frequencies, helping to sculpt a more balanced and open sound.

LC-EQ

The LC-EQ (inductor-capacitor equalizer) is a mid-high frequency processing stage based on a passive coil-capacitor network. This design brings out more presence, definition, and clarity—especially beneficial for improving speech intelligibility and enhancing transparency in the mix.

  • The frequency range is adjustable from approximately 2 kHz (hard left) to 20 kHz (hard right).

  • The use of a high-quality coil ensures extremely low noise in the high frequencies, contributing to a clean, musical top end with rich detail.

Why Coils?
Coil filters are renowned for their musical, natural-sounding character. Popular in the 1960s, they were later replaced by resistor-capacitor (RC) filters due to cost. Today, their distinct tonal benefits—especially in the mid and high frequencies—are highly sought after. When gently saturated, coils produce pleasant harmonic coloration, similar to the warm, euphonic behavior of tube stages compared to transistor circuits.

Intensity

The Intensity control sets the strength of the LC-EQ effect. As the level increases:

  • The gain of the selected high and mid-high frequencies is boosted.

  • Perceptual masking is reduced—so softer high-frequency elements aren’t overshadowed by louder ones.

This results in greater clarity, speech intelligibility, and brilliance, while avoiding the harshness often associated with aggressive high-frequency boosts.

Stereo Expander

The Stereo Expander enhances the perceived width of the stereo image, making mixes sound wider and more spacious.

By leveraging established inter-channel phase techniques, this control allows you to broaden the stereo field of any stereo source—adding depth and dimension without compromising the original signal integrity.

A Sovtek 12AX7 double triode tube is also employed in the Stereo Expander section, where the left and right channels are blended. In this stage, the tube imparts its characteristic harmonic signature to the stereo signal—primarily composed of even-order harmonics—enhancing the overall warmth and musicality.

Beyond simply widening the stereo image, the tube enriches the low-frequency range, improves the spatial definition of reverb, and gently softens the high end. These effects are especially beneficial when working with digitally recorded material, adding analog depth, warmth, and a more natural soundstage.

De-Masking: Revealing Hidden Details

A core innovation of Vitalizer® technology is its ability to “de-mask” overlapping sound components. It achieves this by dynamically adjusting the perception timing of individual frequencies in relation to their amplitude.
Through a subtle temporal shift of louder frequencies, quieter elements that were previously masked become audible—revealing more detail and depth in the audio signal.

The Audio Masking Effect

Example: Bass Content – BOOM vs. PUNCH
When both low-end elements occur simultaneously, the louder BOOM can mask the more subtle PUNCH—causing it to get lost in the mix.

Audio De-Masking with Vitalizer®
The Vitalizer offsets the timing of the BOOM, allowing the PUNCH to emerge.
Result: A tighter, more powerful low end with better definition and impact.

Example: Vocals or Instrument Sections (e.g., Choir, Brass, Guitars)
In a dense mix, dominant vocal lines (e.g., Vocal 1) can mask other harmonies or instruments (e.g., Vocals 4 & 5), resulting in a less transparent sound.

Audio De-Masking with Vitalizer®
By adjusting the perception timing, all vocal or instrument lines become audible.
Result: Greater clarity, enhanced transparency, and more detail across the frequency spectrum.

Tuned to Human Hearing: Equal Loudness Curves

The Vitalizer also adapts the frequency spectrum according to the equal-loudness contours of human hearing—originally described by the Fletcher-Munson curves in the 1930s and today standardized as ISO 226:2003.

These curves represent how the human ear perceives loudness differently across frequencies. By optimizing audio to match this non-linear sensitivity, the Vitalizer improves loudness perception, ensuring that your mix sounds more consistent, full, and impactful—even at lower listening levels.

Inputs and Outputs

The Vitalizer Mk3-T features Neutrik XLR connectors with gold-plated contacts and Neutrik TRS jacks on all inputs and outputs. Both the XLR and TRS connectors are wired in parallel, offering flexible connectivity for various studio setups.

Signal transmission is electronically balanced, with a nominal operating level of +6 dBu, ensuring clean, noise-free performance in professional environments.
