While the original module was a solid-state design, BiG Studio takes things further with a vacuum tube circuit that adds rich, punchy harmonic character — elevating this innovative concept into an entirely new sonic dimension.

Studio Magic

The rich, punchy, and massive results delivered by BiG Studio might feel like magic — but the device is elegantly simple in its design. At its core, a difference signal is derived from the input, processed through an analog filter network, and then blended back into the source via a specialized mix stage.

With its intuitive controls, achieving impressive results is fast and straightforward. Start by selecting a frequency range with the Range control, then shape the depth of the soundstage using the Stage control. The Bigness knob adjusts the intensity of the processing, while the Bass button at the end of the BiG signal chain engages a passive bass enhancement, based on the AirBass circuit from SPL’s acclaimed Iron mastering compressor.

Bring Your Mixes to Life with Tube Harmonics

Beyond the controls BiG Studio shares with its 500 Series sibling, the rackmount unit introduces unique tube-driven features. The Harmonics button engages the vacuum tube circuit’s harmonic generation, while the Tube Harmonics control lets you dial in the intensity of these rich, dynamic harmonics.

BiG Studio’s tube circuit enhances the harmonic spectrum of every source, adding depth, warmth, and a larger-than-life presence with vivid, hyper-detailed coloration. When the Harmonics button flashes, the tube is warming up; it glows solid blue once the tube reaches optimal operating temperature, ready to deliver its full sonic magic.

Engineered to Last

SPL is renowned for the rock-solid build quality of its products, and BiG Studio is no exception. Its 1U front panel is crafted from 4mm-thick black anodized aluminum, complemented by chunky knobs milled from solid aircraft-grade aluminum, making it a unit built to last.

Inside, a robust ±18V audio voltage provides ample headroom to handle large signal peaks without clipping, contributing to the processor’s open, natural sound. All inputs and outputs feature gold-plated Neutrik XLRs and TRS jacks wired in parallel, with electronically balanced signal transmission at a nominal +6dB. A ground switch allows you to disconnect the internal ground from the chassis, eliminating ground loops and ensuring clean, noise-free operation.
