“The OptoFET is my new favorite addition to my vocal chain. It’s easier than ever to stack up different vocal colors quickly and cleanly. It’s perfect to travel with, without the fear of it breaking or needing repair. What more could you ask for?” – Denis Kosiak, Mixer / Producer (Khalid, Jelly Roll, Tate McRae, Morgan Wallen)
“It’s a fantastic sounding FET compressor, which honestly would’ve been enough. It might be the best in class opto compressor, which is even cooler. They’ve got a blend knob for each, which basically makes it idiot proof, and it has proper input and output metering which is just something that everything should have these days and I can’t figure out why they don’t. And somehow, they fit all of that into a SINGLE RACK SPACE. It does everything I’ve been asking for out of a compressor for the last 20 years.” – Matt Beckley, Vocal Producer / Guitarist (Camila Cabello, Ke$ha, Britney Spears)
“The ability to dial in the internal balance of the drum kit from a single mono source feels magical.” – Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys)
“Up until recently, it was a Distressor into a CL 1B for vocals…the OptoFET did everything I wanted it to do in a single rack space without having to take up 4U, which is huge. It’s an amazing tool to have.” – James Butera, FOH (Halsey)
“We wanted that clear punchy sound for the bass and the OptoFET really achieved that. It put the dynamics right where I wanted them to be for the performance.” — Kevin Madigan, FOH (Santana)
Compress Creatively.
From transparent vocal leveling to extreme envelope shaping rich with harmonic texture, the OptoFET is a remarkably versatile analog compressor and wave shaper. It unites a newly designed FET compression circuit with a meticulously optimized optical compressor — both housed in a single rack space—delivering a broad palette of dynamic and tonal control.
The OptoFET offers two primary compression modes. In Dual-Stage mode, the FET and OPTO compressors operate in series, providing precise, musical control over critical sources and effortlessly recreating a classic recording and mixing technique. In Dual-Band mode, each compressor is assigned to either the low or high frequency band, allowing independent processing. This unlocks an entirely new dimension of tone shaping and dynamic control, pushing the OptoFET well beyond conventional compression.
All-New FET Compressor Design
For many years, the engineering team at Rupert Neve Designs explored FET compressor topologies—but it wasn’t until the OptoFET concept came into focus that releasing our first FET circuit felt truly right. While this design delivers the familiar hallmarks of FET compression—ultra-fast response and classic ratio options—it also incorporates a number of distinctive refinements that make it unmistakably Rupert Neve Designs.
Every variable control on the OptoFET uses high-quality, 31-detent potentiometers, a standard shared across most of our current products for precision, repeatability, and recall. The FET compressor offers fully variable Attack (with a blistering minimum of 100 microseconds), Release, Threshold, and up to +20 dB of make-up gain, along with a parallel Blend control ranging from 0% dry to 100% wet. Ratio selection is switchable between 4:1 and 8:1, and a 125 Hz sidechain high-pass filter can be engaged to preserve low-frequency integrity while maintaining firm dynamic control.
To further expand the OptoFET’s creative range, the innovative GRIT mode transforms the FET compressor into a powerful wave shaper, injecting rich harmonic distortion with an emphasis on the upper frequency spectrum.
GRIT can be applied subtly to add presence and help sources cut through a mix, or pushed harder to radically reshape the sound into something entirely new. When paired with the Blend control, it allows precise dialing of distortion character—from the faintest edge to bold, expressive saturation—making GRIT a versatile tool across a wide variety of sources.
Optimized Optical Compressor Design
Rupert Neve Designs has developed multiple optical compression circuits over the years — including the Color Comp found in the widely acclaimed MBT (Master Bus Transformer). For the OptoFET, this topology was further evolved to serve as the perfect counterpart to the fast, high-frequency-focused FET compressor. In contrast, the OPTO compressor delivers a slower, more musical response, generating rich low-frequency harmonics with gentler attack and release characteristics.
The OPTO compressor features fully variable Attack (starting at 5 milliseconds), Release, Threshold, and up to +20 dB of make-up gain, along with a parallel Blend control. Its controls are laid out identically to the FET section for intuitive operation and quick recall. Ratio options include 2:1 and 5:1, and a switchable 125 Hz sidechain high-pass filter is provided to maintain low-end clarity while shaping dynamics.
While the FET section introduces the aggressive character of GRIT, the OPTO section offers its own distinctive enhancement mode: BLOOM.
Engaging BLOOM significantly increases low-order harmonic content, immediately imparting greater warmth, weight, and low-end presence to a source. Used subtly, it adds depth and fullness; pushed further, it can reshape the tonal foundation altogether. When combined with the Blend control, BLOOM allows precise, EQ-free tonal refinement—making it an elegant tool for final voicing and musical balance.
A Note on GRIT + BLOOM
Unlike the SILK circuit — which enhances second- and third-order harmonics through saturation of the physical output transformer — the OptoFET’s GRIT and BLOOM modes derive their character from the interaction between each compressor’s signal path and newly developed sidechain circuitry.
This approach enables far more dramatic wave-shaping possibilities, generating complex harmonic structures that extend well beyond the harmonic profile produced by SILK, and opening up entirely new avenues for creative dynamic and tonal control.
Dual Stage or Dual Band? You Decide.
Some of the OptoFET’s most powerful and versatile features are found in the global control section. In Dual Stage mode, the serial order of the two compressors can be “flipped,” allowing either FET → OPTO or OPTO → FET for complete dynamic shaping.
Switching to Dual Band is just as simple: pressing the X-OVER IN button engages the crossover filters and activates the CROSSOVER variable frequency control. In this mode, each compressor is assigned to either the low or high frequency band, enabling independent processing of both bands simultaneously. The variable crossover control lets you dial in the precise crossover point anywhere from 50 Hz to 500 Hz.
Even in Dual Band mode, the FLIP button remains fully functional, assigning the FET or OPTO to either frequency band as needed. This flexibility is especially useful for bass-heavy sources, offering complete control over the low end while enhancing mids and highs to sculpt the perfect amount of string noise, harmonic texture, or presence.
