*Special Order

“The warmth of the transformer in the MBC is exactly what I was looking for…if you looked at my EQ notes prior to using the MBC and then after using this you’d see WAY less EQ.” – Greg Calbi (Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, R.E.M.)
“The new RND converter is the one you want. It’s worth twice what they are charging for it. It has replaced several high end converters in my rig.” – Chris Athens (Drake, Beastie Boys, DJ Khaled)
“The MBC has quickly become the first item in any FOH scenario. It’s essential to my workflow at FOH these days.” – Matthew Walsh, FOH Engineer (The War On Drugs)
“To me, the MBC is just a perfectly-designed two-channel ADC. Not only does this box sound amazing, but the ergonomics are PERFECT. I wouldn’t change anything about it.” – Pete Lyman (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell)
“My rig consists of the MBC converting analog to AES on the band master bus. I hardly tickle the limiter most days, maybe 1-2dB max, and Red Silk is fantastic over the band bus. The conversion back to digital also sounds incredible.” – JP Huff, FOH Engineer (Pierce The Veil)
“It would be hard to tell which vocals were recorded with tape, and which were just recorded through this. There’s just so much SOUND in here…it can be crystal clear, but if you want color, it’s got all the goodies. The first time I tracked vocals with the MBC it was like taking a blanket off the mic…it’s very quickly become my go-to converter for everything.” – Brett Orrison (Jack White, Widespread Panic, Black Angels)
“I’ve been waiting for somebody to make a converter like this ever since I stopped mixing to 1/2” tape. Of course it was Rupert Neve Designs.” – Chris Bell (U2, The Eagles, Erykah Badu)
“…the MBC does what it does extremely well, and it is a joy to use and listen to. If you want to add some analogue polish to a digital mix, the MBC could well be the finishing tool you’ve been looking for.” – Sound On Sound
“By bringing the company’s transformer-centric expertise to bear in the best possible way – and adding a limiter – they’ve created a high-quality, flexible converter that’s a pleasure to work with.”
“…between the precisely calibrated and detented (recallable) potentiometers and the use of dBFS levels, the MBC manages to speak digital while acting, and sounding, analogue.”
“From truly professional level clarity to classic Neve console-style sonic girth, the MBC delivers superior results across all audio production disciplines that will see it in daily use for those that can afford the investment.” – MusicTech
The ultimate tool for capturing digital audio with the tone, transparency, and power that define Rupert Neve Designs.
Whether you’re tracking, printing mixes, mastering, or driving a large PA system, the Master Bus Converter sets a new benchmark in A/D conversion quality and versatility.
Its proprietary analog drive circuitry lets you choose between a Class-A transformerless path for pure, uncolored accuracy, or custom interstage transformers with variable Silk for a palette of rich tonal textures.
Paired with an exceptionally musical analog limiter, the MBC delivers stunning three-dimensional detail and unrivaled sonic integrity, making it the definitive choice for capturing analog signals with both precision and character.
A Long Time Coming
With more than seven decades of analog circuit design experience, Mr. Rupert Neve never found a digital converter that met his exacting standards—until the introduction of the RMP-D8 Dante-connected microphone preamplifier in 2018.
Although the RMP-D8 was conceived primarily as a mic preamp, its exceptional conversion quality quickly earned the trust of top recording, mastering, and touring engineers. Their enthusiasm and reliance on the RMP-D8 as a reference converter inspired the creation of the Master Bus Converter, establishing a new benchmark for PCM conversion excellence.
Dual Path Analog Design
As the final stage in the analog signal chain before digitization, the converter’s drive circuitry plays a pivotal role in shaping the resulting digital sound. From its inception, the Master Bus Converter (MBC) was engineered for uncompromising reference performance — no matter the genre or tonal goal. The secret lies in the precision and versatility of its analog drive circuitry, which allows the MBC to deliver both absolute transparency and richly musical character with equal authority.
Two Distinct Sonic Paths
When absolute transparency and fidelity are required, the transformerless path delivers stunning detail and clarity. While many transformerless circuits can sound thin or lacking in weight, the MBC’s Class-A design was meticulously engineered to provide exceptional openness and vibrancy across the full frequency spectrum—preserving the integrity of every nuance. This pristine signal path offers a perfect counterpart to the rich, authoritative tone of the transformer path.
For a bolder, more powerful sonic imprint, a custom-designed interstage transformer with Rupert’s acclaimed Silk circuitry can be engaged to recreate the unmistakable warmth and depth of his classic designs. Unlike traditional line-level output transformers, this new design is uniquely optimized to deliver the harmonic character of an output stage at a level suited for A/D converter input.
With variable Red and Blue Silk controls, engineers can precisely tailor harmonic content to taste.
-
Red Silk emphasizes mid and high-frequency harmonics for enhanced presence and definition.
-
Blue Silk enriches low-end harmonics for added warmth and weight.
From subtle transformer coloration with Silk disengaged to deeply saturated tones when the Silk / Texture control is fully driven, the transformer path imbues every track with greater dimensionality, richness, and power.
Compound Active Release Analog Limiter
The goal in developing the MBC’s limiter was twofold: to create a musically expressive dynamic tool that surpasses the quality of plug-in limiters, while also providing a transparent safety net for tracking, live performance, and broadcast applications.
To shape the limiter’s response precisely to your material, the MBC includes several advanced control options. A sweepable sidechain high-pass filter minimizes the limiter’s sensitivity to low frequencies, allowing bass content to remain full and powerful. The Class-A line amplifier stage provides up to 20 dB of ultra-clean gain, preserving the integrity of your signal, while a dual mono mode enables independent channel operation—ideal for high-fidelity instrument tracking and precise stereo control.
Mastering-Grade Conversion
Developed through years of critical listening, the MBC’s 24-bit/192kHz converters represent a significant evolution of the acclaimed design first introduced in the RMP-D8. With an ultra-precise internal clock engineered for exceptionally low jitter and phase noise, the MBC captures every nuance of your performance with astonishing accuracy — delivering an extraordinarily lifelike digital image of your analog signal.
For seamless integration into any professional setup, the MBC provides AES, S/PDIF, and TOSLINK outputs, all capable of simultaneous operation to multiple destinations. A word clock output allows the MBC to serve as a high-end master clock for your entire system, while the word clock input enables synchronization to an external master clock when required.
To ensure precise calibration in multi-converter environments, the MBC offers four selectable reference levels from –14 dBFS to –20 dBFS, allowing exact alignment with your existing gear. These reference standards are implemented with high-precision resistors and relay-controlled stepped attenuation, guaranteeing exceptional accuracy and repeatability across all sessions.
Ultra-Precise Metering
The MBC features a pair of 22-segment LED meters that deliver exceptionally accurate input level monitoring to the converter stage. This newly developed design offers the highest-resolution metering ever implemented in a Rupert Neve Designs product, ensuring absolute confidence in signal levels at every stage.
For detailed monitoring of the limiter’s behavior, 8-segment gain reduction meters provide a highly responsive and accurate display of transient gain reductions. Additionally, the level meters can be customized with selectable 1-second or 3-second peak hold options, allowing engineers to tailor metering response to their workflow and preference.
