Royer Labs’ Pioneering Innovations in Ribbon Microphone Design

The R-12 features several of Royer Labs’ groundbreaking design enhancements, including a multi-layered windscreen system and an internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer. The advanced windscreen offers superior protection against plosives and air blasts, making it highly effective for vocals, close-miked guitar amps, and acoustic instruments. It also helps control proximity effect for more natural-sounding recordings.

At the heart of the R-12 is Royer’s patented offset-ribbon technology, combined with a low-mass, 2.5-micron, 99.9% pure aluminum ribbon element. The internally shock-mounted transducer assembly isolates the ribbon from physical vibrations, enhancing durability and long-term performance.

A custom-designed impedance-matching transformer ensures minimal saturation, while the open-grille architecture reduces standing waves and comb filtering—resulting in greater clarity and sonic accuracy.
