High-performance 12-Inch Active Studio Subwoofer
Whether you’re producing music or crafting cinematic sound, truly accurate full-range monitoring is non-negotiable — and that’s exactly where the ATC SCS70 Pro excels. Handcrafted in England, this high-performance 12-inch active studio subwoofer delivers astonishingly linear low-frequency reproduction, extending to below 2Hz (-3dB) for absolute precision and impact.
Designed for the most demanding professional environments, the SCS70 Pro is an outstanding choice for LFE channel installations on world-class film re-recording stages. Engineered to integrate seamlessly with ATC’s active full-range monitors, it provides uncompromising performance across stereo, multichannel surround, and immersive audio systems — ensuring every detail, from subtle ambience to seismic low end, is heard exactly as intended.
Sophisticated Infinite Baffle Design
During the development of the SCS70 Pro, ATC engineers chose an infinite baffle (sealed-box) design for its exceptional low-frequency extension, accuracy, and superior driver control. The result is deep, tight sub-bass with outstanding transient precision—free from the overhang and coloration often associated with ported designs.
The enclosure itself is massive, rigid, and acoustically inert, engineered to eliminate cabinet resonance and ensure absolute sonic neutrality. Tipping the scales at 96.8 pounds, the SCS70 Pro is a compact powerhouse — solidly built for serious professional use.
Despite its substantial construction, the subwoofer’s compact footprint allows for easy placement in smaller control rooms, while also enabling multi-unit installations in larger environments such as film mixing stages and dubbing theaters. For clear operational status at a glance, the front panel features dual LEDs indicating power/limit and mute, ensuring visibility even from across the room.
Proprietary Driver with Hand-Wound Voice Coil
Exceptional monitors begin with exceptional drivers. At the heart of the SCS70 Pro is a custom-designed ATC driver, manufactured to exacting tolerances at ATC’s in-house facility in England. Each unit features a hand-wound voice coil made from flat, oxygen-free copper wire, operating within a precision-engineered long magnetic gap for outstanding control and linearity.
Carefully designed magnet venting reduces airflow noise and heat buildup, while simultaneously increasing power handling, reliability, and long-term consistency. Like all ATC proprietary drivers, the SCS70 Pro’s transducer is engineered to meet the most demanding professional standards, delivering a smooth, uniform frequency response without reliance on corrective EQ.
For the SCS70 subwoofer system, this bespoke driver has been meticulously optimized to reproduce the lowest three octaves of the audible spectrum. By combining a short voice coil with an atypically long magnetic gap, it achieves high sound pressure levels with exceptionally low distortion, ensuring clean, authoritative low-frequency reproduction even at reference monitoring levels.
Reference-Grade, Convection-Cooled Amplifier
Housed at the rear of the cabinet, the SCS70 Pro’s 300-watt, MOSFET-based Class AB amplifier embodies ATC’s uncompromising design philosophy. Convection-cooled for silent operation, it delivers clean, stable power without the noise or long-term reliability concerns associated with forced-air cooling.
As one of the pioneers of active monitor technology, ATC has always designed and built its own amplifiers in-house. This deep expertise allows ATC to precisely optimize the critical relationship between amplifier and transducer, ensuring maximum control, linearity, and dynamic headroom under real-world professional operating conditions.
The SCS70 Pro incorporates the same proven loudspeaker protection and gain-reduction circuits used throughout ATC’s active full-range monitor range. Even at elevated monitoring levels, clipping is effectively prevented, safeguarding the subwoofer while maintaining sonic integrity. Comprehensive fault monitoring continuously checks for over-temperature and DC offset conditions, with any fault clearly indicated by a single red LED on the amplifier panel.
Comprehensive Control and Connectivity
The SCS70 Pro is equipped with dual balanced inputs, allowing seamless connection to mono or stereo sources, while a pair of buffered, unfiltered balanced outputs enables direct integration with active monitors or straightforward daisy-chaining of multiple subwoofers.
A comprehensive set of controls ensures precise system tuning across a wide range of monitoring environments. These include a 21 dB gain range, three selectable low-pass filter frequencies, polarity inversion, and a continuously variable 0–180° phase control, making it easy to achieve optimal alignment with virtually any full-range loudspeaker system. For installations using external bass management or room correction, the low-pass filter can be bypassed (Off / 320 Hz) for maximum flexibility.
For practical workflow integration, the SCS70 Pro can be muted via a latching footswitch connected through a ¼-inch jack—ideal for instant A/B comparisons. The mute function affects only the subwoofer output, leaving the signal to connected full-range monitors untouched. When multiple subwoofers are deployed, additional units can be muted simultaneously using the Mute Thru connection from a single footswitch.
A Legacy of Monitoring Accuracy
ATC’s story begins with Billy Woodman, a young engineer who spent his formative years working alongside some of the finest loudspeaker designers of his generation. In 1974, Woodman founded ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) with a singular goal: to build the most accurate monitor loudspeakers possible.
That focus has never wavered. For decades, ATC has pursued absolute monitoring accuracy — because great recordings only happen when engineers can hear every nuance, exactly as it was captured and mixed. Translation beyond the studio depends on truth, not flattery, and ATC monitors are engineered to deliver precisely that. Using bespoke components of the highest quality, each system is designed to reveal detail, balance, and dynamics without coloration or compromise.
ATC’s reputation is reflected in the professionals who rely on them. Renowned producers and engineers such as George Massenburg, Chuck Ainlay, Nathaniel Kunkel, and Doug Sax have long trusted ATC monitoring. You’ll also find ATC loudspeakers installed in Abbey Road Studios, Sony Music Studios New York, Blackbird Studio Nashville, and countless other world-class facilities where accuracy is non-negotiable.
This enduring commitment to truth in monitoring is why ATC remains a reference standard for audio professionals worldwide.
