The API 527A Compressor/Limiter seamlessly integrates into the esteemed family of API VCA-based compressors, joining the ranks of the 225L compressor and 529, 2500, and 2500+ stereo bus compressors. Those acquainted with these units will instantly feel at ease with the 527A.

Shared features within this lineup encompass the choice between “feed forward” (NEW) and “feed-back” (OLD) gain reduction methods, conveniently selectable on the front panel. This provides the option to embrace the traditional or modern approach to compression, delivering unparalleled flexibility in signal gain control. The “old way” or feed-back method mirrors the gain control circuit of classic compressors, while the “new way” represents the more contemporary VCA type compressors relying on RMS detectors for gain control voltage.

The inclusion of a “SOFT”/”HARD” knee switch empowers users to achieve an “over-easy” compression for a natural, uncompressed sound or opt for a sharp knee type, imparting a more pronounced limiting effect.

Integrating the patented THRUST® function, switchable on the front panel, introduces a filter before the RMS detector circuit, preserving the punchy bottom end for a distinctive sonic character.

For stereo and multichannel applications, the 527A Compressor/Limiters can be linked effortlessly via a DC link, enhancing versatility in audio production setups.

Noteworthy is the consistent output level, unaffected by threshold or ratio control adjustments, akin to the “more/less” Ceiling control on the API 525 Compressor. This unique feature enables live adjustments without perceptible gain changes in the program level.
